History of Twillman House

German immigrant, John Henry Twillman, built the Twillman house in 1870 from handmade brick and Mississippi limestone, which made it unique fromother 19th century homes. Twillman’s decendents inhabitated the home until 1945.

Carle and Mary Plith purchased the home and converted the building into the Meadowlark Restaurant in 1974. Later the building became the Old Homestead Restaurant until the 1980s.

In 2005, the Spanish Lake Community Association purchased the Twillman House and spent the next decade renovating the historic home with support from the community. In 2017, the Twillman House Community Center opened to serve Spanish Lake’s 20,000 residents.

The Twillman House Community Center currently hosts community meetings, serves as a hub for free VITA tax preparation assistance, and is rental space for residents for events like baby and wedding showers, funeral repasses, family gatherings, and other events.
